Athames and bolines are ritual tools in Wicca, witchcraft and other pagan traditions. The athame (pronounced ah-thah-may) is an ancient and powerful witch’s tool that’s commonly used within rituals to direct your spiritual energy. Traditionally, it was a black-handled and double-edged dagger, but some prefer their tools born of nature, crafted from wood or bone. Truthfully, the material it’s been crafted from and color is really a personal choice. The most important aspect of the athame is that it feels natural in your grasp. In most traditions it represents the element of Fire (although in some it represents the element of Air). The phallic symbolism of the knife links it with the masculine.
The boline is typically used as the utility blade, cutting thread or herbs. The can also be used to carve symbols onto candles.
